When he prodded it with a pointed rod, the stone miraculously started bleeding. This astounding event led villagers to believe it was a divine manifestation. That night, Lord Shani appeared in the shepherd’s dream, revealing his identity and instructing that the idol be installed in the village, under the open sky.
The Burning Neem Tree Branches
An interesting phenomenon, often cited by older villagers, concerns a neem tree located to the north of the Shani idol. It is said that if any branches of this tree grew long enough to extend over the idol, they would mysteriously burn to ashes or break and fall off. Despite this, no one was ever harmed, and the shade of the tree never fell upon the idol, reinforcing the belief that Lord Shani does not desire any overhead covering.
Unique Rituals and Strict Rules for Devotees
The temple follows distinctive and rigorous rituals for worship:
- Bare-Chested Men: Male devotees wishing to perform the ‘Abhishekam’ (ritual bathing of the idol) must take a holy bath in the consecrated water and then perform the puja while bare-chested, wrapped in a wet cloth. This signifies humility and purity.
- Mustard Oil Offering: The primary offering to Lord Shani is mustard oil, which devotees pour over the idol. There are pipes installed that channel the oil to the idol.
- Women’s Entry: Traditionally, women were not allowed to climb the platform to offer prayers directly to the idol. While the temple committee has faced legal challenges and, in recent years, relaxed this rule to allow women onto the platform, the deeply ingrained tradition among many female devotees often leads them to offer prayers from below the platform.
